Finally! Today is the day!

Today is the day we get our keys to our first home. This house was meant for us, I just know it! It’s a quaint 2 bed 1 bath cottage home circa 1954! Isn’t she charming? She is a modest home, and we are a modest couple. We don’t need to keep up with the Jones’ and have the biggest and best. We take pride in living within our means and being happy with what we have, because we work really hard for everything we have. I am very proud of us, we did it 100% on our own, with help from no one! I feel that buying a home in CA is a huge accomplishment period, but especially at the tender age of 22! I don’t mean to toot my own horn, but I am pretty lucky! I have everything I could want. We couldn’t be happier.

Its Finally Here! The VLV 14 Band Line-Up!

ATTENTION!!!!

It has finally come, the moment we have all been waiting for!

Tom has posted the Viva Las Vegas 14 Band Linup!

So, without further delay, here it is:

Where to start? Jerry Lee Lewis is the main event, but no surprise to me, since I heard about it at the last VLV. The bigger surprise to me was THE BLASTERS!!! I have been saying that they need to play Viva forever. That will be a real treat. Unfortunately, both bands are only playing at the car show. Which means I will have to go. Ha ha. I was a little disappointed with the rest of the lineup. It lacks luster for me. But, I know Jerry Lee doesn’t come cheap! I also think that as usual, WILD is over-represented. I am happy to see The Caezars back though! They are the only WILD band I am in love with at the moment. I am happy to Jack Baymore and the Bandits, The B-Stars, Kim Lenz, and my friends The Hi-Lo Playboys on the line-up.

Also noted on the website is that the tiki pool party will take place on Fri, Sat and Sun! Whoooo hoooo. 3 days of leis, tiki cocktails, and sun! Does that mean I need 3 vintage playsuits? I better get shopping!

I have my hotel booked Tue-Mon. See you all there!

The count down begins!

264 Days Until VLV 14!

Not only am I on the verge of getting everything I ever wanted......the perfect rockabilly boyfriend (soon to be husband when we buys the perfect antique engagement ring), the perfect 50s house, the best friends a gal could have.......but I also just won Vintage Christine's blog giveaway! It was the best giveaway ever. Vintage Christine generously cashed in all of her change and got a $100 ebay giftcard to giveaway. Yup! How's your mind? Blown? Mine was today when I found out I won! I am broke because of the home purchase, so this could not have come at a better time. I think I am going to try and get that microwave with it. Microwaves are expensive, and we need one asap to heat up all that delivery pizza we will be eating for days. he he he. I wanted to publicly thank Vintage Christine for the amazing giveaway. I really really appreciate the generosity. She is a real Doll!

Heads up! New Header!

Okay, so I am finished playing with my background now. This background will stay, promise! I had a custom header made (by the best sister ever, who just happens to be the best graphic designer ever) and then I just had to update the color scheme, and now it is perfect! yay. She made that header in like 5 minutes. She is ridiculously talented! If anyone needs some work done, let me know and I will refer you to her. She also made my business cards, and they are amazing! Anywho, just thought I would give you the update on the new look!

Hello Vintage Cosco Cart!

Today’s Ebay acquisition is a vintage white and chrome cosco cart for my kitchen. It’s a little kitchen, so we need this for more space. We plan to put the most retro looking microwave we can find on it. Ha ha. We chose this one from LG:
It sort of looks atomic right? I like that the port hole is round instead of square.

In the kitchen we plan to paint the cabinet faces Burma Jade from Sherwin Williams Suburban Modern collection. That color perfectly matches our 50s cracked ice diner table (which we still need chairs for). The base of the cabinets will stay white. Hopefullly we can add some small round corner shelves here or there for added decor space.

This is the best example I can find on how we want to do the cabinets.

Then we plan to change the cabinet pulls to these vintage reproduction chrome boomerang pulls.

We are going to leave the Youngstown metal sink base white. That should make it stand out nice. We will paint the walls a light buttercream yellow.

Eventually we want to redo the counter tops with Formica’s Skylark print in teal.

Then we want to pull out the current tile and do a geometric vinyl tile pattern in cream, yellow and teal.

This is the patern floors we are going for.

We want to change out the current stove for a 1950s O’keef and Merrit, one of the ones with the fold down burner cover so we can use it as extra counter space when the oven is not in use. Everything in the 50s was designed with small spaces in mind, and how you can maximize that space, and we appreciate that! We eventually also want to get a 1954 GE fridge and freezer combo in white. Then I just need some matching novelty print curtains, and some vintage kitchen knickknacks. I can see it all now……

How the kitchen looks now.
Hey, I never said it would be easy!
But she has good bones to work with.

Eat in kitchen where the diner table will go.

Sorry, but you will have to wait a while until we release the "after" pics.

Im so Rockabilly……

I shit with deadstock toilet paper.

No not really, but I would if I could. That was what Alana told me the first day I met her. I have loved her ever since! Its now my favorite quote of all time.

This post is not about toilet paper, just the bathroom. We move in 12 days, so I am decorating everything in my head. Today I wanted to tell you about how I plan to decorate my bathroom.

Mostly I just wanted to show off the most amazing thing I just won on ebay!

It’s a vintage gold glitter bathroom set with a tissue holder (that attaches to the wall, great for small vintage bathrooms like ours with no counter space), a tooth brush holder (with cap so your brushes stay clean), a 8oz rinse cup, and a scalloped soap dish! I loved it from the moment I saw it. It’s very Vegas Elvis! Or like a confetti lucite purse! The best part is that I won this set for only $2.24! Best deal every off ebay. $16.94 after shipping. Am I crazy? Am I the only one that thinks this is the shit?

It looks like it is tearing-ass around the bathroom, but it's standing still!

We plan to do a light pink, gold and black bathroom. I was inspired by Karen's bathroom seen on RetroRenovations:

Isn’t that just to die for?
I don’t know if I will be able to find a pink toilet and sink, so for now I am going to work with my white 50's tub, white toilet and white sink. I am just going to paint the vanity, walls and hopefully redo the tile on the floors and tub surround. I want to paint the walls a pale pink and do gold stars like in the photo. I found the most amazing pink, gold, black and white atomic vintage shower curtain on ebay, but I was outbid. Darn! It would have been perfect. I will just have to keep looking for that. Also for a pink toilet lid, a gold trash can, and some amazing towels. Oh and pink and gold chalkfish. Decorating is fun! He he.

Now all I need to find is that deadstock toilet paper!

CD REVIEW: The Modern Sounds

I have been wanting to do CD reviews for a long time and am finally getting around to it. Zack and I discussed doing a He Says/She Says CD review, and we think it will be perfect for my readers. You get the serious musician’s point of view from Zack (which the men will appreciate), and you get a light-hearted, fun, listener point of view from me (which the girls will like). Hopefully between the two you will get a really good sense of the CD. We spent a lot of time on this one (Zack more than me unfortunately), but we hope you like it. To kick it off, we chose this CD for our first review:

He Says,
“The best new band in America!” – Deke Dickerson

That statement about sums it up when talking about “Joel Paterson and The Modern Sounds.” This Chicago based trio features Joel Paterson (ex Jimmy Sutton’s Four Charms) on guitar and vocals, Beau Sample (ex Cave Catt Sammy) on bass and vocals, and Alex Hall on drums and vocals. Together this trio founded Ventrella Records in 2008. In 2009 they released their debut double album showcasing their wide range of musical talent. “Hold it Fellas” is side one of the album and features the band’s more rockin’ and blues repertoire. You need not look any farther than their take on the classic Hank Ballard tune “Don’t change your pretty ways” to hear what makes this band stand out. Joel’s lead vocal and guitar work combined with Alex and Beau’s solid rhythm and harmonizing truly make this track a joy to tap your feet to. Side two of the album is entitled “Stomp Stomp” and as you might guess from the name it is full of the swingin’ and jazzy side of The Modern Sounds. If their rockin’ side had you dancing all night at the juke joint then their swinging side will have you drinking martinis in an ol’ fashioned prohibition era speak-easy. The trio does a fantastic job with the Tiny Grimes penned “Stomp Stomp” which features Beau Sample showcasing his talents on lead vocals and also on a bass solo that shows why he’s one of the best upright bass players on the scene today. The band doesn’t just do covers though. Take a listen to the Joel Paterson arrangement “Handful of Strings” and see how good of composers they can also be. Individually each side is capable of being a great record, but combine the two sides and sounds and you have something really special. The whole album was recorded using no overdubs and a minimal amount of mics, which enables you to listen as if you were watching and hearing The Modern Sounds in a live club. They really are as good live as what you hear on the album. 4 out of 5. …Only because I know these guys are too good not to do even better!

She Says,
I let Zack write his review before me, that was my first mistake. What can I say now?

We first saw The Modern Sounds at Deke’s Guitar Geek Festival in 2009. We loved them immediately! We have been wanting their CD since then and we knew that Viva Las Vegas would be the perfect place to get it. Since The Modern Sounds were playing Viva they would also be doing a CD signing right after the show. We decided to buy the CD directly from them in order to get a signed copy and a photo with them. Out of all the CDs we bought that year, we listened to this one first. The CD was produced through The Modern Sounds own Ventrella Records out of Chicago, and Joel Paterson is also to credit for the design of the CD cover. It’s made to look like an old record, with side A and B. This is hands down the best CD design I have ever seen. You can tell a lot of time and thought went into the production of this CD. It definitely was not a quick throw together type of job. And it only gets better when you actually listen to the CDs. It is a two CD set, CD one is called “Hold it Fellas” and is dubbed as the rockin’ side, and CD two is called “Stomp Stomp” and is the swingin’ side. It’s impossible to decide which one is better, as I go back and forth between the two all the time. My favorite song on the album is Beau Sample’s version of Andre Williams’ “Bacon Fat”. This is an amazing song, one of my favorites, and Beau really does it justice. I also love the harmonizing done on “Don’t Change Your Pretty Ways”. Individually they are extremely talented musicians, but together they knock your socks off! They are different than anything out there right now, and different in a good way. This CD would be ideal for a swanky cocktail party, Chicago style! All you would need is this CD, extra dirty gin martinis with 3 olives, and some shag cocktail napkins. They even have the perfect cover song for the occasion, “Atomic Cocktail” done in a sexy swinging jazz way. I think this CD is a 5 out of 5. They get an extra star for being such sharp dressing cute boys!

"Stomp Stomp"

Rebel Beat: The Story of L.A. Rockabilly

Yesterday I arrived home to find a new Netflix DVD in my mailbox. What could it be this time? It was Rebel Beat: The Story of L.A. Rockabilly. This DVD was made in 2006, and sadly I never got around to seeing it until Zack found that Netflix had these sort of Rockabilly documentaries. Lately we have been spending a lot more time watching old movies because we can’t go out and spend money until after we close escrow. I was looking forward to scratching the rockabilly itch with this DVD so we watched it last night. Right off the bat I was slightly disappointed because the opening introduction song was not a rockabilly song at all, but a sort of vaquero song. The DVD started out talking to various people (Big Sandy, Glen Glenn, Ronnie Weiser), asking how they got into the scene. They filmed at a ton of local events (most of which I was at that year), including Viva Las Vegas ’06, The Hollywood Rockabilly Showdown, and Blessing of the Cars. They also went to local hangouts like Rudolpho’s, Spike’s, The Palamino, and All-Star Lanes. It was fun seeing all of these places! Then it went into the story of Ronnie Weiser, and how he came to America and went on to start Rolling Rock Records and record some of the greats like Gene Vincent, Ray Campi, The Blasters, etc. In my opinion, this was the best part of the DVD. It was fun to see them film him and his family in their home showing off clothing and rockabilly memorabilia because I could say, “I have been there!” Not only is Ronnie wildly entertaining and the most American “foreigner” I know, but a pioneer in modern rockabilly as we know it. I also learned a few things in this section that I was surprised about. I never knew that The Blasters recorded their first record on Rolling Rock Records including their hit song, Marie Marie. Wow! Like I said, Ronnie has an ear for rockabilly and was more influential in modern rockabilly music then just about anyone else I have had the pleasure of meeting in my short life. The rest of the DVD followed DJ Chuy throughout East LA. That part dragged on a bit, maybe focusing a little too much on the Latino experience in L.A. The DVD capped off with some great dancing scenes from Viva Las Vegas, Spikes, and Bowl-a-Rama, therefore redeeming itself. This DVD was about what I expected, maybe a little bit better. It didn’t quench my rockabilly thirst (what does?) but instead just added to it!

Middy Long Here I Come!

Summer is officially here, and long hair is sooooooo last winter! So I am cutting it off and going for a Middy cut this summer. I don’t want it too short, so I am going for a Middy Long. I have been growing my hair out forever, trying to get a Jayne Mansfield ‘do. But, alas, I am not Jayne. As much as I want to be Jayne, I am not. I am Dollie, and Dollie looks best with short curly hair and a bow. So lets not fight it any longer. Lets embrace the Middy this summer! I have my appointment tomorrow at 12 for a cut and color, so wish me luck! This is what I am bring to my stylist tomorrow:

This is a Femme Fatale, basically a really long Middy.

I dont know how long I really want it (just touching my shoulders when curl tight and brushed out), so I dont know if what I want it really a Femme Fatale, so I am calling it a Middy Long. I will update you with pics asap!

LA's Rip Off Of The Day!

I am always surprised when I read peoples blogs and hear them talk all about the deals they find at flea markets, antique malls and estate sales. One of the blogs I read had a post all about the vintage stuff she has paid a dollar for. There was way cool stuff like atomic serving dishes, lamps, etc. A dollar??? I can not find one stinkin’ thing at my antique mall for a dollar, the buttons, post cards, and even their coffee is over a dollar. I cant find any of those deals. Not in LA. So just for fun, here is my rip off of the day. This is a cute set right? Not for $495! I bought this exact table, but in a better color (light green cracked ice) for $45 on Craigslist. I feel bad for the sap that paid $495 for this set. Whaaaa haaaa haaaaaa. People in LA, gee wiz.

Home Update

Sorry I fell off the face of the earth there. Sadly, I have not been much of a socialite lately. There are many reasons for this. One is that I have been sick. I had a sinus infection for a few weeks. That wasn’t cute, but I never let a little illness threaten my good time. The main reason I have not been very social is because I am broke. House broke actually. If you remember, we found “the house”. It’s the oldest house in the entire town! At least from what I can tell. It’s a 1954 cottage and it was built in the hills as a vacation home for a fellow who owned all the land in said hills. It was the perfect house for us, and very much in our budget at $194,000. We put in an offer $14,000 below asking with $7,000 closing costs included. We wanted help with the closing cost because we wanted to save some money for furniture…..and maybe an engagement ring. Ha ha. But they counter offered with $192,000 and $3,000 for closing. They said that this was their best offer. We wanted more for closing, so we asked if we could settle on $194,000 with $6,000 closing. They said no. Why? Because they said they worry that the house would not appraise for over $192,000 so they wouldn’t take anything over $192,000 and wouldn’t give anymore than $3,000 for closing. Hum. So, we looked into our budget and realized that we would just squeak by if we save every penny. So, we accepted the offer and set up a home inspection and appraisal. The home inspection went great. The home was taken care of very well. Basically everything is in perfect working order and there is no mold or termites. The appraisal on the other hand didn’t go so well. It appraised for $180,000 (our initial offer price). To most people that would be great news. To us, not so much. See, we are fine with the monthly mortgage amount. Where we are strapped is the closing cost. If the seller had to lower the price to $180,000 to meet the appraisal, we know she would take out the $3,000 for closing costs, and we didn’t have $3,000 more to put into closing cost. Ehhhhhh. But, we looked into the numbers again, and realized that since the sales price was $12,000 less, then the down and closing cost would go down a little, about $800 based on the new sales price. So, we were $2,200 short. But we really need this house! We already sold pretty much everything we could. We sold our 1955 Ford Fairlane to Japan. I listed and sold some clothing on myspace. The only thing of value we had left was Zacks 1957 Gibson Les Paul and Fender Hot Rod DeVille Amp. We went to Guitar Center this weekend and sold those for $1,250. So, we are closer, but still need to scrimp and save every little penny from now until closing. That’s why we cant really go out for the rest of the month. I promise that my posts will get more exciting after we move. Then I can blog all about decorating. Yay! We are having a yard sale this weekend to get rid of all the stuff we dont want to bring to the new house, so hopefully that will bring in something. I am still selling some clothes and home décor on my myspace, so check it out. We need all the help we can get!

XOXO
